I want to participate in this 10-week program to learn more about the business aspect of veterinary medicine. Although I have some clinical experience already, the business experience I gained during that time was limited to the occasional work as receptionist. As someone with the goal of being a successful private practice veterinary medicine, I hope to gain more insight as to what is necessary to be both a successful businesswoman and a successful veterinarian simultaneously. As a veterinary student, we are exposed to medicine and patient care often but the financial and management aspect of veterinary medicine often falls through the cracks. I want to walk away from this program with a greater understanding of how to successfully run a small business and provided a high level of care at my veterinary clinic.

I hope to bring my creativity to SHIP and challenge my practical mindset whiling learning about the business aspect of owning a private practice veterinary clinic! I am excited to learn how to successful run a small business and learn about how what goes into making a lucrative business.

I would invest in my community. I think that showing my clinic’s name and my face around the town can have a great impact on the community’s support of my business. I would use the money towards charitable donations and sponsorships. For example, I could sponsor the local girls’ soccer team jerseys. This facilitates passive advertisement and a community connection which helps the business and shows the community that we are there to serve them. Additionally, I would use the money to put on events or provide bonuses to my staff. In order to have a high staff retention rate, staff need to feel appreciated. I would have staff parties and dinners to show my staff that I am thankful for them (and people love free stuff and gift cards)!

I would ask my staff for feedback and try to be as approachable as possible. It can be easy to run on cruise-control and neglect certain aspects. Often, people have good ideas but are too scared to say anything. By having an open line of communication between my staff and I, we can work to alleviate problems or at least have a discussion about them. Additionally, it can be beneficial to take supplemental courses on my own time to continue learning and challenging the current practices we have implemented. It is important to be kind and respectful to the staff, even when times are tough. People respect honesty and they could come up with ideas that can really help the business, if given the opportunity.

I am excited about the management side of private practice. I like working with people in organizational-type settings. I like the idea of working my own hours and having the potential for uncapped growth with my own rules in place. I would also consider owning multiple practice, but that is a long way from now! Investing is important to me, so I am excited to explore that further.
