  1. Based on what I know about this program, I want to participate so I can work side-by-side with veterinarians and gain valuable insight into case management and client interaction.  Also, this program is an exceptional opportunity to practice some of the technical skills I have learned at veterinary school.

Before I became a veterinary student last fall, I worked as a veterinary assistant at a twenty-four-hour emergency animal hospital.  I had the opportunity to work with exceptional veterinarians and support staff and began to learn the ins and outs of emergency medical care. Now that I have spent some time at veterinary school and have further developed my didactic knowledge, I am eager to see how this knowledge can be applied daily as well as gain some clinical knowledge that cannot be taught in the classroom.

Not only am I eager to work with veterinarians, but I also want to work with veterinary technicians and other support staff to learn some of the technical skills that I do not have experience with.  As a veterinary assistant, I did not have the opportunity to draw blood, place IV catheters, or hold for radiographs. Although I have begun to learn some of these skills as a veterinary student, this program is a great opportunity to practice under the supervision and guidance of experienced support staff.

My ideal outcome for this program is to apply and thereby reinforce the knowledge I have learned at veterinary school and gain insight from experts in the field. Above all, I am eager to meet and work with new individuals. My hopes are not only to further my knowledge of the industry but to further my understanding of people and hopefully build meaningful, lasting relationships with my team.

I hope to bring a mindset of insatiable curiosity to a SHIP practice this summer. I believe that continual improvement should be the goal of every veterinarian who is striving to provide their patients with exceptional care, and the only way to improve is to actively seek out new information.

If my practice had a great year and we now had an extra 40,000 dollars to spend, I would begin by asking my staff for ideas on how to invest those profits back into the company. Every team member in the practice might have a different idea on how to improve their experience as well as the experience of our clients. It is important to me that my staff feels that their voices are heard and that I do not limit our practice by making decisions based solely on my perspective. Once I gather ideas from my staff, I will work with my management team to see which ideas are the most practical and which ones will provide the most value. Based on this assessment we would decide where to put the funds, whether that be towards equipment, staff, or educational experiences for our team.

If my practice had a worrisome year, I would take a similar approach as I mentioned above. I would begin by asking for my team’s input to gain a better understanding of opportunities for improvement. I would also encourage feedback from our clients to see how we can improve their experience. With all of this feedback, I would work with my management team to strategize ways to address any issues. On top of all of this, I would reflect on my actions and make sure that I was not hindering our success through my practices. Together, we would identify any problems and work to come up with solutions to get our practice back on track

I believe that ownership provides an excellent opportunity for a veterinarian to draw upon all of the experience that they have gained over their career to create their own business and provide exceptional care to their clients. Having worked in a variety of hospitals over the span of career allows the owner to implement some principles in their own practice that they thought might have been absent in practices that they have worked in previously. Also, owning a veterinary practice allows you to give back to the community in a multitude of ways. Not only can you provide high-quality care to your clients, but you can also provide jobs to people of your community and allow them to showcase their talents. I cannot wait to own a practice one day, and leave a lasting impact on my community.
