The Harbor Vet program not only offers an experience unlike any other for experience across the nation in topics that interest us, but also provides a whole community to be apart of. The main selling point for me was how inviting and helpful everyone within the community is and as a young Vet Student trying to sort through things having people to help me is priceless.

In terms of goals my main goal would be to experience as many hospitals as I can to compare how each work as well as gain as much knowledge as I can. Working with multiple vets often shows me new ways to perform things I had done before in a more efficient way such as blood draws or catheter placement. From this externship I would love to experience the Equine field or large animal field since it is the form of veterinary medicine I am least familiar with. Having worked with horses in school made me interested to dive into the field and see if it is something I truly would like to do. Otherwise, my interest would be to work with exotic animals and small animal medicine, so basically wherever I would be placed would be perfect for me as the experience alone is priceless. While in these externships I do wish to learn more about clinical skills like blood draw and IV catheter placement to prepare for clinical work. Ultimately, I feel the SHIP program would be an indispensable experience for my veterinary career.

I think the best skill I have is the ability to be part of a team as both a member and a leader, depending on the situation at hand. As a result, my inclusion into practices is fairly easy as I will follow those above me diligently. Once I absorb the knowledge of those above me I can then be a teacher for those after or a reliable leader in times of need making me a versatile employee in a practice.

I personally would use this money to give bonuses to my team for working so hard. I feel as an employee it is easy to feel like you are replaceable or not good enough for the position and regardless of how much praise given they cannot see it. I feel by providing a bonus for a job well done it shows that I truly appreciate the work they put towards the practice. By doing so not only will their moral be raised but their loyalty will grow tremendously, and in my opinion the closer the members of the practice are the more fluid and efficient it can operate in the future.

I think the most important thing to do is to sit down with the team and brainstorm what the issues are within the practice that are hindering efficiency. By working together as a team to solve the issues there is a better feeling of continuity and the team can work more cohesively in the future. With a strong team practicing excellent medicine and showing true care clients will pick up on it and start to build a better relationship. In the end our medicine is not just for the animals but for the people so it would be important to shift towards excellent client care since that is how you become noticed, build great rapport, and even get referrals for new clients.

The main reason I wish to own my own practice is because there is something liberating about being your own boss. While working within a company is great being able to tread off on your own is both exciting and terrifying, but in the end it is an amazing experience even if I choose not to stick with it forever. By doing so I feel I can really grow as a person and truly understand the inner workings of a business to improve how work in the future.

I do have an interest in oncology or other specialties as a means to figure out what I would like to specialize in after graduation.
