From what I understand, this program is a really good balance between clinical and business experience. I’m excited to get to work closely with the veterinarians in the program, understand clinical reasoning and learn new techniques relevant for my future career. I also think the program’s opportunity to experience the business side of a small animal practice is really valuable and not something that the majority of summer programs for vet students.

I am a quick, dedicated learner, and take initiative to succeed in any new environment I find myself in. I generally approach every challenge with a positive attitude and can get along with pretty much anyone.

I would begin by asking some of my colleagues at different practices what equipment or diagnostic tools they had compared to my clinic. For instance, if my clinic didn’t have dental radiographs or an ultrasound machine, I would ask colleagues who did have it if they used it frequently, if they felt like it was worth their investment, what the upkeep was like, that sort of thing. Basically, I would want to invest in new equipment that would (hopefully) have a low maintenance cost going forward from the initial investment, while bringing better care, diagnostics, and increased income to my clinic long term.

I would preferably get an outsider to assess the clinic as it currently is running - to see how all the areas of the clinic are running both separately and cohesively. I think it would be important to have a new perspective of things; obviously the first step is to figure out what you are doing wrong so you can make a plan to reverse that. I also think it’s important to be frank with your staff - keeping things somewhat positive, not overly critical, but being honest about where things stand and what we need to improve upon. I would definitely focus on teamwork - point out the clinic’s strengths and things that we are doing well and emphasize in a constructive manner what we can improve upon - and the fact that we are all responsible for improving, not just one person/section of the staff. I also think it would help to set goals that the whole clinic checks on periodically to make sure we are all making progress towards improvement going into the next year.

Well, I'm not sure that I want to be an owner of a veterinary practice as of right now (that’s part of why I am interested in this program - to explore that option more), but I am certainly open to the idea. I’m attracted to the level of control that ownership allows you to have over your medical decisions as a doctor and maintaining a level of patient care that fits your values. Also, like most vet students, I will be graduating with a significant level of student loans and I am naturally interested in the financial opportunities that lie in ownership as well.
