I would like to participate this program to become the best hospital leader I can be. Based on my past experiences, I know SHIP and Harbor vets will help me to achieve this. By strengthening my knowledge in the duties and responsibilities required to run a veterinary hospital, as well as teach me how to achieve my goals, I know further training with SHIP will benefit everyone involved. My ideal goal at the end of this program is to be able to confidently understand and apply the skills of leadership, management, and running a veterinary business in order to achieve my goal of one day running a chain of veterinary businesses.
I am experienced and trained in veterinary technical work (anesthetic induction, surgical prep, auscultation, intubation, IV catheter placement, dentistry X-rays, and dental cleaning). I have taken leadership and teamwork roles in numerous other clubs, drafted and completed my own senior thesis, and was trained as a community outreach representative for the Sacramento Zoo.
I would choose to reevaluate how much we are spending on employee wages and navigate a way to fairly add a bonus to their paychecks, the largest sums going to the employees who have proven to be the most beneficial to the clinic. A saying I always had in my experience in veterinary hospitals is that I would rather be the only veterinarian in a hospital with 10 technicians than in a hospital with 10 vets and one technician. Although a good veterinarian is integral to a practice, good staff is the deciding factor of the success or failure of a business. As the backbone of the clinic, I believe their financial wellbeing is one of the most important factors to consider when spending profits.
I would take time to treat the clinic as I would a patient. Something is wrong, and were going to find out what and what steps we can do to treat/mitigate these issue to a better quality of life. I would first look at the technical matters of the clinic. How much did we spend in supplies, advertising, building maintenance, and non-essentials? I would like to see if there is any way we can curb expenses without jeopardizing the quality of the clinic. If we are unable to diagnose any specific problem or devise a solution, I would contact experts such as financial advisors and accountants to assist in these affairs. If the issue is not technical but personal, I would again look to see if we need improvements on staffing, customer service, public representation, and/or general approachability of the clinic personality. Again, if we are unable to diagnose/ treat the issue at hand, I would seek out experts in human resources, conflict resolution, customer service, and public relations. I would also look to see if there is a way we can reinvent ourselves through new uniforms, design, renovation, or new training that offers unique services not provided before that are needed in the community. By being honest, optimistic, and practical, I believe that I can inspire my staff while also stressing the gravity of the situation to lead to a quick and positive solution.

I want to be able to take the improvements, feedback, and changes that I encountered that would be beneficial to a clinic and make them a reality. I understand that veterinary medicine is currently a booming business and with a higher demand for veterinary care comes a higher demand for business to facilitate this. I am drawn to the leadership and ability to make change for the better in my community through veterinary medicine.

I am interested in becoming what I call a "Mixed-Exotics" Veterinarian. My ultimate goal would be to be able to treat every or nearly every species a client could possibly own. I understand that this is an ambitious goal and I have yet to meet a vet who does this, but I am eager to be the first.
A few idle interests that are certainly not needs to be met:
-I love to travel to new places, distance will not be an issue for me
-I am a tactile learner and as much hands-on experience possible is ideal for me
-I would love a hands-on mentor as I love to (politely) ask as many questions as I can.
-Although I grew up in California, with summer heat reaching 104F and up, I am not a big fan of hot weather and would prefer a location with milder summers
