Based on what I know about this program so far, I want to participate because I am interested in learning the practical business ownership skills necessary to successfully own and/or run a veterinary clinic. I have been interested in practice ownership for a few years, but do not have a background in business at all. I have been able to learn a little bit throughout school and previous clinical experience, but I would like the opportunity to take a deeper dive into the behind the scenes tasks of a practice owner.

I think the most valuable attributes I will bring to a practice this summer are my work ethic and my willingness to learn. I truly believe that learning by doing is the way I learn best and hope to be helpful in the clinic while I do that!

I would choose to invest this money into a new piece of equipment and a fun day off for the staff! I think this is very possible with $40,000 depending on the particular piece of equipment. If for example the practice did not have the ability to offer ultrasound because it did not have the equipment, it is likely that buying an ultrasound machine would become a great investment due to the profit earned from performing ultrasounds in house. I also believe that it is extremely important to keep staff morale high and let them know that they are appreciated. The employees at a veterinary practice are absolutely necessary to keep the practice running well and profits coming in, so it is important to retain as many as possible. Investing in their wellbeing could be a good step to take in order to improve retention.

I think in order to turn things around at the practice it would be important to determine where efficiency is lost in the day to day tasks. I feel like small changes can make a huge difference in efficiency, so looking for places to make small changes would be ideal. It is also important to make sure that the staff has not noticed any moments throughout their day which could be more efficient. Each person has a different viewpoint and may be able to make changes that make a huge difference. This team approach is also helpful in keeping morale high because it reminds each person that they are an important member of the team.

I like the idea of ownership in a veterinary practice because I like the strategy behind creating the most efficient practice possible. I also think that being able to make a difference in the way a practice is run is a great privilege because it can make a difference in so many people’s lives, both employees and clients.
