I am interested in participating in this program because a classmate of mine, Zofia Balcerek completed the program this past summer. She had a wonderful time at her practice location, got to scrub into surgeries, and got to see the insides of how a general practice hospital is run. All of these aspects are intriguing to me, especially the opportunities for learning about business administration within our field. My ideal outcomes are to gain hands-on technical skills, gain surgical exposure, and gain exposure to what business administration in veterinary medicine actually requires of its doctors.

In the workplace, I am imaginative, coachable and a team player. I believe these skills can help me to assist the practice I am matched with in developing their missions, being a helping hand ready to jump in, and by remaining positive and contributing to practice morale.

Firstly, I would allocate a portion of this money into bonuses for my staff. I believe that hard work and team efforts should be rewarded, and a 40,000 surplus takes everyone's participation and involvement. It is not just doctors who provide quality patient care, so I would work out a portion of these funds (perhaps 1/4-1/2 depending on the number of staff) to set aside for staff bonuses to let them know I appreciate their efforts.
The rest of the surplus would be allocated towards equipment upgrades and things that doctors at the practice felt would help improve patient outcomes, depending upon our needs. This may be something along the lines of new monitoring equipment, or tools or materials to be able to offer a new surgical procedure or service to clients.

To improve team efficiency and morale I would institute morning meetings where we discuss how things are going with patients, and all the different departments (CSRs, technicians, doctors) can collaborate on what they need from each other to operate more smoothly. I would also implement one on one meetings with each staff member to ask them what skills or trainings they would like to learn personally, so that we are able to offer more volume and quality services to our clients. This may look like educating CSRs on the reasons behind using different medications or surgical procedures, or training technicians and assistants to be able to complete more tasks and optimize our workflow. This could also look like investing in doctors more by paying for trainings or seminars in order to widen their skill sets- both in medicine and communication. Having highly trained staff should improve the quality of our medicine, and help us to generate business by word of mouth within the community.

I would seek ownership in a business to be able to have a bit more freedom in deciding best practices and policies I would like to operate under. I am very interested in acupuncture, and so owning my own practice would allow me the freedom to develop and offer these skills (in conjunction with standard Western medicine) to my general practice client base and open up new pathways for treatments and therapies on my own terms.

I would love to work in a fast-paced GP practice. I love working busy shifts with high case volumes in general practice because I love that you can see something new every singe day, and still are able to develop client relationships and spend time on client education.
