As of now, my veterinary education has taught me how to apply the basic sciences in diagnosing and treating patients. I have worked in clinical settings but have failed to understand the business aspects behind veterinarian medicine. I want to learn how the business works from staffing and over-head cost to taxes and insurance. I know SHIP has the resources I need to help me fulfill my goals.
I have a strong sense of teamwork, leadership, and dependability. I am a Navy veteran and I understand that adaptability is the key to making any group of individuals a success.
I am a strong believer in workplace morale. Without the production of the staff, a clinic becomes unprofitable and maybe even toxic. I would save 20% of it and use it as a holiday bonus pay to thank my staff in hopes they know that I appreciate their efforts. I would use the next 40% in equipment upgrades and hospital upkeep. The last 40% I would use in advertisement, and hospital renovations to make the facility look more appealing to cliental. Whatever money is not spent, I would save towards investment in an additional hospital.
If my hospital is operating at a loss, I first would need to find the source of the problem. Is it that not enough people are walking through the door? Is it that we are not charging enough for our services? Is it that too many people are on staff? While the investigation in ongoing, I would let the staff know that the clinic is underperforming and that we as a team will be able to remedy the problems. I do not lie, so I would never cover up the true conditions of a business because the staff has the right to know how their clinic is performing. This open line of trust is hopefully a good tool to keep morale high while the problems are being addressed.

I have always worked for someone. I want to be in charge of how things operate because I feel I will have a good understanding of how to efficiently and effectively run a veterinary practice. I see myself as a social person, and I want to help others become a success from the owners perceptive. I have always helped others as their peer, and I know I will be a good doctor, business owner, and mentor for those that work for me.
