I am on the fence about how I would like to utilize my DVM degree. I am hoping that by the end of this program I will have a clearer idea regarding how well I fit with practice ownership.
I hope that I can bring a fresh perspective to a SHIP practice. Before beginning at my DVM program, I worked in the business/management side at a pediatric clinic, and I was a practicing real estate agent for a time as well. I would like to take this broad range of experience and see how it can fit in with a veterinary practice.
I would invest this money into improving client experience. This could be sprucing up an unattractive waiting area, or it could mean expanding client services. If I know, for example, that a large proportion of my clientele utilize acupuncture for their pets, then I may explore obtaining those services at my own practice. If I know that many of my clients want a boarding facility, then I may see if I can make an investment to fit those needs. If I can offer more services that are attractive to my clientele, then I have more opportunities to get them into my door and therefore more opportunities to gain their approval.
I believe that no one person has all of the answers. So the first thing that I would do is create a committee or have additional team meetings to collectively problem solve what is going wrong with the practice. Assuming that the employees are working at a veterinary clinic in part because of their love of animals, then it can be assumed that the majority are pet owners themselves. I would ask what qualities they seek out when looking for veterinary care. Does my practice meet those needs? If not, then I would want to implement changes to ensure those qualities are met, and I would schedule follow-up evaluations to ensure those changes stick. I hope that by approaching these issues as a team, then not only do I broaden the perspective, but I show everyone that their opinions are meaningful and respected.

The world is constantly changing and I believe any successful business needs to have some level of fluidity to stay relevant. I like the idea that as an owner I would be the one to implement those changes in a way that I see fit, as opposed to lacking that level of autonomy working at a practice I do not own.
