The idea of practice ownership made me shy away from that opportunity and possibility in my future. However, after I joined VMBA and heard from current practice owners, I began to consider the possibility that I can run my own business someday. I grew up in a town where almost every veterinary practice is privately owned, and they are increasingly going corporate. I have noticed clients begin to shy away from corporate practice, so maybe one day, I will have a practice with the same small-town feel that I grew up in. I'm eager to learn the real-life logistics of veterinary practice ownership and learn how to successfully operate from the business side of veterinary medicine.

I am fairly new to VBMA and the idea of veterinary practice ownership, so what I lack in business knowledge, I believe I make up for with an enthusiastic mindset, and an eagerness to immerse myself in new things and learn from others who have succeeded before me.

I would likely to choose to invest the money in a new piece of equipment that I had been eyeing that would financially allow the practice to profit and improve efficiency. Otherwise, I would choose to invest the money in my staff by giving an extra bonus. I think it will keep staff morale high and maintain their trust and desire to work for a practice that values their work.

I would schedule an all-staff meeting to discuss the failures of the previous year and reach out to staff for reasons why they think the practice stagnated. It would also be beneficial to discuss with my team what methods they think would work to reach business goals and investigate what they would expect in maintaining efficiency and confidence in the practice. I would also bring ideas to the discussion in how I think things could be improved and a game plan for making those changes and opening the floor for feedback on those implementations.

I would eventually like to make my own schedule and run the operation with my own personal touch. A practice can be like a child in a way, where you want to make it yours and will work hard to make it succeed.
