The SHIP program will allow me to have a meaning full and fulfilling experience over summer. Since vet school has extreme schedules, it can be difficult to take on adventures and experience new things outside of school. Through this externship, I am looking to get more real-world experiences and hands-on skills that cannot be learned in the classroom. I also want to learn how to apply the clinical skills and knowledge that I have learned in the classroom in the field. Last summer, I participated in a 6-week externship at the vet clinic in NYC. I went over numerous cases and scrubbed-in surgeries and dentals. At OSU, in our 2nd year of vet school we take classes based on clinical settings such as Endocrinology, Urinary System, Cardiology, Digestive system and Musculoskeletal, etc. In my 3rd year, I will be able to participate in our school clinics and practice working like a real veterinarian. Therefore, before this I would love nothing more than to gain proper experience to get my foot in the door by successfully working alongside practicing veterinarians.
I am quite open minded and passionate about learning new things. This includes not only studying firsthand from veterinarians but also going further to learn hands-on skills from veterinary technicians and assistants to achieve well-rounded knowledge of the career from various perspectives and bring this knowledge to the table when I return to school.
Since the most important part of treating patients is coming up with differential diagnosis, I would invest extra money into the laboratory machines or any other surgery/treatment equipment. also, since technology and companies are continuing to develop amazing and groundbreaking tools that can achieve precise laboratory results such as CBC, BioChem profile, dental x-rays, and laser therapy, it is important that a practice has the most up=to-date technologies and equipment to treat its patients.
Also, I would want to spend this extra money to aid struggling staff members or as funding for the clinic environment. If there is any issue regarding personal or financial hardships, etc. that staff members are struggling with, I would love to create a fund to help resolve the matter. It is important that the staff members' personal lives are strengthened so that they can bring positive energy into the workplace as well. Also having parties or company dinner s with other staff members is a great option to grow community and bonds between members and also give recognition to their efforts and the roles they play that are a big deal.
As communication is important in running a position of leadership, I would first discuss this with my staff because since I run the practice, I should be knowledgeable on the systems and goals of the clinic, and I have the responsibility to analyze what the issue may be. However, I would also understand that I cannot see everything, so I need other's opinions to fill in what I am missing. Also gather other's opinions as such helps come up with better solutions and options from a wider range of perspectives. I would also survey clients to see what is missing and what the greatest needs of the clients are. By facing these challenges head-on with a positive and optimistic mindset, and solve them together with the members of the clinic, I believe this would increase business efficiency and regain the ground lost.
