You explained it clearly. They responded. You explained it again. And somehow, you’re still having two different conversations. When people don’t feel understood, more information is not always the answer. Reflective listening helps veterinary professionals identify what another person is actually trying to communicate—and lets the other person know we heard it before we move into explanation or problem-solving. Using familiar veterinary scenarios, participants will practice paraphrasing, reflecting meaning and emotion, clarifying, and summarizing. The goal is not to make every conversation easy. It is to spend less time talking past each other and more time moving toward shared understanding and a workable next step. This directly builds on the reflective-listening work and “you can’t feel appreciated until you feel understood” theme in the OVMA material.
Learning objectives
By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
1. Use reflective listening to identify misunderstandings sooner, reducing repeated explanations and helping conversations move forward more efficiently.
2. Apply paraphrasing, clarification, and summarization when tension rises, decreasing frustration for both the speaker and listener.
3. Demonstrate understanding before moving into problem-solving, strengthening client and team relationships and contributing to more satisfying day-to-day interactions.
