About

Job Description

Sunset Animal Hospital is happy to provide 1st – 4th year veterinary students externship opportunities ranging from 1-8 weeks depending on your year of school and curriculum requirements.  Priority will be given to 4th year students, but all students are welcome and encouraged to apply.

We are a busy companion animal practice with 10 veterinarians and 50 technicians/technician assistants.  Our externs have the benefit of learning from a wide variety of cases, as our 24/7 practice sees a continuous mixture of general medicine, wellness and emergency patients.

Under veterinary supervision (and depending on your year of school) you will be given the opportunity to develop your technical skills while participating in rounds, surgery, treatments, and consultations with clients.   You will gather histories, perform physical examinations, develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans and prepare SOAP notes for review.  This will also be a great time to strengthen your client and staff communication skills, along with problem-solving skills that will be essential for long term success.

Your schedule will be provided at orientation and will be approximately 40 hours a week consisting of days, evenings and weekend shifts which will provide the widest variety of cases.

Requirements:

  • Our program is open to 1st – 4th year students enrolled in an accredited DVM program
  • It is important that you define the educational objectives of your CVM program before your externship starts so we can assure we do our part to help you meet those objectives.  Please include them with your application.
